Support and Hope for All Communities

The FAST Program is a community-based suicide prevention and mental wellness program administered through Gitanyow Health Services.  The program serves Kitkatla, Kitsumkalum, Kitselas, Glen Vowell, Gitanyow, Gitanmaax, Kispiox, Gitsegukla, Gitwangak, Hagwilget, Witset and Haisla First Nations.

FAST focuses on early intervention, outreach, and connection to professional supports.  Suicide prevention is at the heart of the program, with an emphasis on ensuring individuals at risk are never left alone, are connected to trained mental health professionals, and receive ongoing care.  In emergency situations where a life is in immediate danger, calling 911 is emphasized as the fastest way to access urgent help.

The program takes a hands-on, relationship-based approach to outreach.  This includes meeting people where they are; often through direct community outreach, to check in, listen, and offer support.  FAST helps individuals connect to counsellors, doctors, and psychiatrists, and supports them through the process of accessing care, including long-term monitoring when needed.

Recognizing that grief, loss, and trauma can leave individuals feeling stuck, sometimes for years; the program supports people in understanding where they are in their healing journey and identifying healthier ways of coping.  FAST integrates culturally grounded practices and ceremony, acknowledging these as sacred, personal, and powerful tools for healing and moving forward.

Counselling services can be arranged privately from home through secure online platforms such as Zoom, provided there is internet access.  FAST works closely with both internal and external service providers to ensure coordinated, wraparound support.

Above all, the program encourages individuals to trust the process, take that first step forward, and reach out for support.  FAST helpers are available and committed to walking alongside community members as they move toward wellness, safety, and hope.
